  1. Emission of light from a body when its atoms
  2. are excited to incandescence by means other
  3. than raising its temperature. Short-lived
  4. luminescence is called fluorescence;
  5. longer-lived luminescence is called
  6. phosporescence. When exposed to an external
  7. source of energy, the outer electrons in
  8. atoms of a luminescent substance absorb
  9. energy and `jump' to a higher energy level.
  10. When these electrons `jump' back to their
  11. former level they emit their excess energy as
  12. light. Many different exciting mechanisms are
  13. possible: visible light or some other
  14. electromagnetic radiation (ultraviolet rays
  15. or X-rays), electron bombardment, chemical
  16. reactions, friction, and radioactivity.
  17. Certain living organisms produce
